Why Can’T My 5 Year Old Ride A Bike? [Solved]
It’s totally understandable if a kid is scared to learn to ride a bike - falling off and getting hurt isn’t exactly fun. But, as Vince Damiano, an REI Outdoor School instructor who teaches bike riding classes for adults and kids, says: it could also be because the bike looks like a lot of work.
Safety Gear: It is important to ensure that your child has the proper safety gear when riding a bike, such as a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and reflective clothing.
Bike Size: Make sure the bike is the right size for your child. A bike that is too big or too small can be dangerous and uncomfortable to ride.
Balance: Before allowing your child to ride on their own, make sure they have mastered balancing on two wheels without assistance from you or training wheels.
Rules of the Road: Teach your child basic rules of the road such as stopping at stop signs and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks before allowing them to ride alone in public areas.
Supervision: Even after teaching your child how to safely ride a bike, it is important that you supervise them while they are riding until they are old enough and experienced enough to do so independently without supervision from an adult or guardian
